Some of the most important points to remember when trying to get your website to the top of the Search Engines is to not annoy them!! So what annoys the Search Engines?
The best place to start is by following the Google Guidelines, the Yahoo Guidelines and similarly on Bing. There can be so many pitfalls to fall into, either accidentally, or even worse by doing it on purpose! To help you along the way, we've put together a Top 5 SEO tips of what NOT to do.
- Firstly, never ever pay for entry within a link farm. You'll see these offering 500-5,000 links for a monthly subscription. Seriously, these will do more harm than good and can get your domain barred from the Search Engines. Now if you want to be found to generate business, and you've invested a good deal of money in a website, then this is the last thing you need.
- Likewise, don't become the other side and have hundreds of outbound links from your homepage for the sake of it.
- Don't steal content from other web sites. To Google, et al, this looks like... well, plagiarism! They don't like to see duplicated information across the web, so start writing good quality content. I know it's a bit like hard work, but it pays off in the end.
- Don't post nothing but "me too" posts just to show off your presence in web forums. Use in combination with a link-rich content.
- Don't try and do it on your own... Now you could have guessed that I'd say that, but by getting a recognised professional SEO strategist like Nail'd Events to do this for you, you shouldn't fall into the pitfalls!
We hope this helps get you started. And don't forget, SEO is an art-form. Don't leave it to guess work. Create a plan of attack and stick to it.
