Big SEO no-nos!

However good your SEO, the key aim is always to get a higher listing in search engine directories. So when one of those search engines shares tips on optimising your site for SEO, it’s worth taking notice, after all they should know what works and what doesn’t.

On the Bing Webmaster Centre Blog last month Duane Forester who runs the public outreach side of the Webmaster program for Bing gave 18 tips on how to best optimise your website.

The 18 points are not comprehensive apparently, but designed to cover “the important aspects you should look at addressing”.

Certainly worth a look and if you are designing a new site from scratch, well worth using as part of your template.

We suggest you read the full blog but if time is short make sure you memorise these 8 definite no-nos:

cloaking
link buying
like farms
link farms
three-way linking
duplicating content
auto-follows in social media
the thin content approach

Let's face it, it's tempting to take advantage of these, but you'll destroy your search engine credibility.

Social Media and SEO

So how important is Social Media when it comes to SEO? Reports recently suggest that Google and Yahoo along with other Search Engines, are taking Plus one, Facebook, twitter, etc into account when working out the importance of a page.

Now, more than ever, it is so important to have all of these profile set up, interacting and sent out to your potential clients. Not only will it create direct business, but will also increase the importance of the in-bound links, thus increasing your own page's rankings.

The Worst Things To Do In SEO

Some of the most important points to remember when trying to get your website to the top of the Search Engines is to not annoy them!! So what annoys the Search Engines?

The best place to start is by following the Google Guidelines, the Yahoo Guidelines and similarly on Bing. There can be so many pitfalls to fall into, either accidentally, or even worse by doing it on purpose! To help you along the way, we've put together a Top 5 SEO tips of what NOT to do.

  • Firstly, never ever pay for entry within a link farm. You'll see these offering 500-5,000 links for a monthly subscription. Seriously, these will do more harm than good and can get your domain barred from the Search Engines. Now if you want to be found to generate business, and you've invested a good deal of money in a website, then this is the last thing you need.

  • Likewise, don't become the other side and have hundreds of outbound links from your homepage for the sake of it.

  • Don't steal content from other web sites. To Google, et al, this looks like... well, plagiarism! They don't like to see duplicated information across the web, so start writing good quality content. I know it's a bit like hard work, but it pays off in the end.

  • Don't post nothing but "me too" posts just to show off your presence in web forums. Use in combination with a link-rich content.

  • Don't try and do it on your own... Now you could have guessed that I'd say that, but by getting a recognised professional SEO strategist like Nail'd Events to do this for you, you shouldn't fall into the pitfalls!

We hope this helps get you started. And don't forget, SEO is an art-form. Don't leave it to guess work. Create a plan of attack and stick to it.
